Central Memorial Park is Calgary’s oldest park, established in 1885. It resides in the heart of the Beltline, being within walking distance to downtown Calgary. The park is a space for those who lost loved ones in the Northwest Rebellion (the Piegans), and it was one of the first cemeteries in Calgary that opened its grounds to everyone regardless of race or religion.

It occupies roughly two hectares, centred around Shaganappi Point—a spike of volcanic rock jutting outwards from the south side of the Bow River, chosen as a strategic lookout by Blackfoot warriors who would watch for enemies advancing from the east. The hours of operation in Central Memorial Park are from 5 a.m. – 11 p.m. Convenient parking is available at the rear of the Memorial Public Library.

Park Structure

Central Memorial Park is both an oasis and a legacy at the heart of Calgary’s downtown, reflecting the Edwardian era’s ideals. Its symmetrical layout, manicured lawns, a mix of domestic & exotic trees and plants, intricate bedding schemes & geometrical walking paths provided tranquil respite for urban dwellers while, at the same time, demonstrating the far-reaching influence of the British Empire and the triumph of humanity’s rationality over the chaos of nature.

Park Features

Central Memorial Park has many sites to explore, including;

  • Cenotaph
  • National Heritage Site
  • Pathways
  • Boer War Memorial equestrian statue
  • A Memorial honouring Rt. Hon. Richard Bedford Bennett
  • World War I soldier statue facing the Calgary Public Library.
  • Restaurant – Sidewalk Citizen coming soon.

Monuments

There’s a touching bronze statue at Central Memorial Park in downtown Calgary. The Louis-Philippe Hébert equestrian statue, which stands at the east end of the park, is considered by many to be among one of the finest equestrian statues in the world. A beautiful statue on the corner recognizes the fallen war heroes in Calgary. The figure is a tribute to the City of Calgary’s fallen soldiers and the sacrifices they and their families made.

Central Library

The Memorial Park Library is a classic example of the Beaux-Arts style, integrating architecture and sculpture while reflecting the prevailing tastes in library design. The building exemplifies the Edwardian classical library design tradition as it rose to prominence throughout western Canada in the early 1900s. The building features grand proportions and restrained ornamentation. It contains seven rooms on each floor arranged in an open plan that is significantly unaltered since its construction.

Activities

The park contains the Calgary Cenotaph and the City of Calgary Archives Building. The City of Calgary brought the land to use as a recreational park. This large urban park is visited each year by millions of people who visit it to see and enjoy the large playground, skating rink and pond in winter.

The main events held at Central Park are the Remembrance Day ceremony, ANZAC Day at the cenotaph, and Calgary’s international literary festival Wordfest at the Central Library.
