Location & Directions at Glenbow

Located across from the Calgary Tower on Treaty 7 territory, Glenbow’s downtown location provides easy access to the city’s cultural life. At the north of Calgary’s Central Business District, sandwiched between Stephen Avenue and Olympic Plaza, Glenbow is an easy walk from Calgary’s cultural anchors.

It is a few minutes East of Downtown Calgary on the C-train line. There is metered parking located on 9 Avenue S.E., between Centre Street and 1 Street S.E. The Glenbow is a short walk from Calgary’s LRT line, ParkPlus downtown parking lots, and bike racks.

The Glenbow Museum in Calgary offers a dynamic and diverse collection of art, historical objects and exhibitions for all ages. The museum has galleries, changing exhibitions, a library and an archive for art, fashion, design and innovation.

Library

The museum’s research library is the largest of its kind in Western Canada; it contains more than 225,000 art books, catalogues and periodicals. The library also features Canada and other western Canadian history resources.

Glenbow’s downtown museum location offers an intimate experience for visitors interested in viewing original works of art, exploring contemporary and historical exhibitions, or uncovering stories about artists and art-related organizations in Calgary and southern Alberta.

Exhibits & Programs

Glenbow’s exhibits and programs span the entire breadth of Canada’s artistic, cultural and technological history. It also boasts the most extensive collection of owned Canadian art in the country.

Novelty and diversity are two words that best describe the collections of this museum. The exhibits spread over three floors in groups of ethnology, military, mineralogy. There is a substantial Asian collection too. The main objective of exhibiting such a variety of artefacts is to provide a glimpse into the diverse nature of cultures across the globe.

Art Gallery

Glenbow Museum is Calgary’s fine art museum and the only Canadian West Coast-based collections centre located in a rapidly growing city. As of May 2018, Glenbow welcomed over 96,000 visitors through its galleries while educating almost 12,000 students and adults through its public programs. Glenbow is devoted to preserving the past for today and increasing understanding about how our times’ fast change is having a profound impact on our future.

The Military Museum

Canada has a long military history and a proud catalogue of military achievements. The Military and Mounted Police collection includes an extensive collection of artefacts relating to Canadian military history.

The museum’s collection also includes several European and Japanese armour, firearms and other weapons worldwide. This collection sorts into the following categories, Arms and Armour, Firearms, Canada at War, Famous People and Battles, and Mounted Police.

Archives

The Glenbow archives are Canada’s largest non-governmental repositories and a major research centre for historians, writers, students, genealogists, and the media.

This remarkable collection of archival records includes over 3,500 metres of textual records and nearly one million photographs, documenting Western Canada’s history from the mid-1800s to the present. The provincial archives are open for research by arrangement with staff.

Admissions & Coupons

The Glenbow Museum offers free admission from 5-9 pm on the first Thursday of every month. On Community Day, free access from 3 to 9 pm. Glenbow Museum offers special passes for the museum’s permanent exhibitions and library (prices vary).
