Did you know that you can see the spire on top of the Calgary Tower for 75 miles around? The building itself is a 191-meter freestanding observation tower in the city’s downtown core. As the tallest structure in Canada and the seventh tallest building in North America, the Calgary Tower is one of Alberta’s most iconic landmarks.

History of the Tallest Tower in Alberta

Previously known as the Husky Tower, Calgary Tower was built in just 14 months and officially opened on June 30, 1968. Being Canada’s second tallest observation tower at the time, it surpassed Toronto’s Commerce Court West Tower as the tallest structure in Canada; a title transferred to Toronto’s CN Tower in 1976.

When it got built in 1968, it became the tallest freestanding structure in Canada until 1985. It was built as the first Canadian structure on a base isolator to protect sensitive below-grade areas from vibration and the first Canadian building to have a loadbearing elevator that can move cables above the roofline.

A Must See Attraction in Calgary

The Calgary Tower is a genuinely wonderful landmark in Calgary, and it’s simply a must-see attraction when visiting the city. A distinctive feature is an expansive glass-enclosed elevator “cage” that glides silently upward outside of the enclosed structure. It is also used as a public observation platform, offering the city’s views from its two glass-sided elevators.

It is one of Calgary’s most readily visible monuments and has become a symbol of the city. A glass and brass revolving observation level at 181 metres provides visitors with spectacular views of the city.

The top of the Tower is 66 m (217 ft) above ground level. The main floor of Calgary Tower is home to the Johnnie Walker House and the Observation Deck as a tourist attraction for sightseeing.

Things To Do at Calgary Tower

Sightseeing

The Tower has 30 floors and is the 13th tallest building in Calgary. It also features a souvenir shop and the revolving restaurant, Sky 360, which rotates to give customers a view of downtown Calgary. If you want to look at the view when it’s not rotating, you have to sit on the other side of the window.

Restaurants & Shops

With complimentary access to Calgary Tower restaurants, you can book reservations to elevate your dining experience. There are guest rooms inside the Tower’s upper reaches above the restaurant, bar and gift shop. From the Calgary Tower souvenir shop, you can take your pick from hundreds of items that make your trip’s unique gifts or souvenirs.
You can enjoy Calgary’s best view from a rotating restaurant overlooking downtown Calgary while dining on a variety of delicious dishes.

Theatres

If you’re interested in Calgary theatre or looking for a night out at the theatre, this is the place. Located at the Tower’s base, this building has been entertaining Calgarians for decades and stands out as one of our busiest theatres in the community. The Vertigo Theatre is a theatre company that performs mystery plays inside the Calgary Tower and other surrounding areas.

Location

The Calgary Tower locates in the heart of downtown at Centre Street North and 9th Avenue. Given the Calgary Tower’s unique location to the city, it is accessible by car, C-train, or walking.
The downtown C-Train stops right in front of the Tower and puts you in the heart of all that is Calgary, from great restaurants and shopping to fantastic museums and day trips. You can easily book your ticket to Calgary Tower and skip the lane with a convenient online booking system.

Explore the whole city from up high

Climbing the Calgary Tower seems to be a popular attraction in the city. At the top are panoramic views of most of downtown Calgary. There are also exhibits on local history and the stampede grounds.

The Tower is the perfect adventure for families, friends, and couples. The observation deck features a 525 feet glass floor above the street level, allowing you to stand on top of the 9th Avenue and an elevator that takes you right up in a minute. A tour guide is available at peak times.

The panoramic views of downtown Calgary from the Calgary Tower Observation Deck are amazing. When you look out, you can even see Canada’s first national park, Banff, as well as all the mountains that surround it. According to new provincial measures enacted on December 13, 2020, the Calgary Tower’s Observation Deck will be closed until they establish well-safe regulations.
